Riad Lilli 1

Riad Lilli 1

Marrakech, Marocco

CLIENT:

Private

PERIOD:

2001 - 2003

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

The building in the Medina of Marrakesh was in deplorable condition, since it was practically untouched from the beginning, for over 150 years, and only partially used over a period of several years. It’s a classic Riad design, with rooms surrounding an interior courtyard filled with orange trees and fountains. The goal of the project was to preserve, replace, and surpass its architectural characteristics simultaneously. The Riad Lilli was revitalized, using both scaled-down traditional Moroccan and modern handwork and construction technique, as a house for friends.

Riad Lilli is located on a quiet street adjacent to the Jemaa el Fnaa square and consists of a ground floor, upper floor, and a roof garden with a Moroccan bath. The house offers 6 bedrooms with baths, a parlor, a generously-sized kitchen, and an interior courtyard with orange trees and fountains. Traditional handwork and construction detail work, like the Taqdelckt (a paste made of sifted lime that is applied to the walls and spread with granite plates), the Zellij (classic Arabic motifs and mosaics applied to the walls and floors), and the Zouak (engravings), stand adjacent to new reinforced concrete elements, which have been set into place for structural stabilization, new spacial configurations, courtyards, patios, openings and penetrations, and provide unanticipated views and incidence of light.
